Scimtar Horned Oryx (Oryx dammah) is a large, desert-adapted antelope known for its long, backward-curving horns. Once extinct in the wild, it has been successfully reintroduced into its native range in North Africa through global conservation efforts. The efforts by exotic game ranchers in Texas and New Mexico have made the scimitar one of the most prolific of the protected animals.
An adult oryx can stand about 3 to 4.6 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 220 to 460 pounds. Males are slightly larger than females. The body is mostly white to help reflect the desert sun, with a reddish-brown neck and chest. Calves are born with a yellow coat that changes to the adult coloration within months. Both males and females have long, thin, ridged, and sharp-tipped horns that curve backward like a scimitar sword, which gives the species its name. These horns can grow to be over 3 feet long.
Oryx can go for months without drinking freestanding water by extracting moisture from plants and having specialized kidneys that prevent water loss. They can tolerate an internal body temperature as high as 116°F, allowing them to conserve water by not sweating as much during the day. A network of fine blood vessels cools blood flowing to the brain. They are mostly inactive during the hottest part of the day, seeking shade or digging depressions in the sand to rest, and are more active and graze primarily at night.
The Hunt Hunting for the scimitar-horned oryx is a prominent activity in Texas, where large captive-bred populations thrive on private ranches, far exceeding the numbers in their native North African range. This practice, which is permitted year-round in Texas with a standard hunting license. These animals can be hunted safari style or any of the typical hunting methods.
